A fire broke out in Po Toi O, Sai Kung this morning (12/8) around 8:30 am. Police received multiple reports of a fire at a fish farm opposite a minibus stop; some residents also reported fires in squatter houses and boats. Firefighters dispatched two hoses and two breathing apparatus teams to extinguish the fires, while a fireboat was also on the scene.
Initial reports indicate that a man in his sixties injured his finger while fighting the fire. At the scene, fireboats were seen continuously spraying water onto the fish rafts in the sea opposite them. Police assisted in closing roads to facilitate rescue efforts during the firefighting operation.
The injured man refused to be taken to the hospital, and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
According to reports from the scene, a man was powering the stern engine of his speedboat on a fish raft more than ten metres offshore when an explosion suddenly occurred, with two loud bangs heard. It was reported that a malfunctioning rectifier caused the fire, and the man injured his finger while trying to extinguish the flames. Both the fish raft and the speedboat subsequently sank.
