Tiu Chung Chau/Jin Island
Around 2:20 pm yesterday afternoon (7/8), a 58-year-old man was suspected of drowning about 10 metres off the coast of Jin Island (Tiu Chung Chau), Sai Kung. He was seen floating on the surface by the his colleagues but fell into a coma while being rescued. He was sent to the Sai Kung Marine Police Bse and then taken to Tseung Kwan O Hospital by ambulance. He needed to be resuscitated with an automated external cardiac compression machine during the process, but unfortunately he died at 3:57 pm.
The victim’s elder brother revealed that the deceased had no children, suffered from high blood pressure, and had previously suffered a stroke. He had worked at Hong Kong Disneyland since its opening, for over 20 years. The victim had snorkelling experience but had not told his brother that he had gone out to sea that day.
It is understood that at around 10:30 am that morning, the victim and 15 colleagues went for a boat trip and that around 2:00 pm, he and six colleagues took a speedboat to Tiu Chung Chau, and together with three of them, went snorkelling not far from the shore. A while later, the waves got bigger, his three colleagues returned to the boat, only to realise that the victim was missing. The group searched along the coastline and finally found him near a sea cave.
He was floating face down on the surface of the water. Although he was quickly rescued and put on a speedboat, he could not be saved despite being rushed to the hospital. A spokesperson for Hong Kong Disneyland Resort told the media that they were deeply saddened by the passing of their colleague and extended their deepest condolences to his family. They pledged to do their best to provide the family with the necessary support and assistance to help them through this difficult time.
