A road and trail running event in honour of Superintendent Andy Naylor, who died in a New York triathlon, will be held in Clearwater Bay and Tseung Kwan O on April 19.

It’s a marathon that Andy would approve of:  42km of road running mixed with tough ascents and descents of peaks in the Clearwater Bay hills.

Before he succumbed to a heart attack swimming in the Hudson River, Andy was a frequent sight on our roads in Sai Kung. Andy didn’t run the roads. He pounded them.

Often he was training for the Dowman police running race in the country park, which he usually won. A big grin and the lithe figure would race by.

After his death in 2012 residents held a memorial run in the stadium, hundreds wearing red, running, walking or wheeling around the track, remembering Andy.

The organiser of the April 19 event is Steve Carr, a teacher. “This race will celebrate Andy’s immense ability not just as a road runner but as a trail enthusiast.  It will be hard on so many levels.”

Runners do not have to do the full 42km.  You can book in for a 17km event or an 8km family version. The latter is an attractive option, a countryside excursion in the hills above Lobster Cove.  Every runner in the family event is required to have someone under 14 with them.

It’s a charity exercise, intended to be annual, with money raised going to “all in unfortunate circumstances through tragedy or life-changing

injury.”  The main event costs $550 to register and the others $400 and $350 (for two).
