Spawned in Sai Kung, Casa looks further afield

Sai Kung’s 20-month-old Casa Group is on the expansion trail.

James Bradshaw, one of the owners, said they have signed up for a 2000 sq ft basement site in Kennedy Town.  The site is near the University of Hong Kong at 28 Woo Hop St and includes a 400 sq ft ground floor area.

The Casa style, as seen in Sai Kung, will be repeated, James said.  Simple gray walls with blackboards and an island bar where the cooking is done.  This will be in the basement. The ground floor area will be for reception and possibly a deli and wine takeaway.  Fitting out is going on now with opening planned for June.

Casa was launched in Hoi Pong Square in 2013, a creation of James and partners, who include Nathan Fleck and Phil Bradshaw, brother of James. James said he is the largest shareholder, although not a controlling one. The concept is tapas influenced by Izakaya, the casual Japanese establishments, with selections of craft beers and wines.

“We sneak Japanese ingredients into just about everything,” James said. “I’m anti-tradition. I don’t like things to be the same all the time.”

James, who has been in wine retailing almost all of his career, started the Winerack website with Rob Knightsbridge five years ago. Andy Konrad launched the shops on a franchise basis.  All are Sai Kung residents.

Casa Group will aim for three or four restaurants in the short term, James said.
