The Sai Kung owner of Winerack stores has closed his Tai Po Tsai outlet and will replace it with a site in Sai Ying Pun. Andy Konrad said he has signed a lease for a 500sq ft premises on the ground floor of 25A High Street.
Fitting out is going on now for the new Winerack near the Sai Ying Pun MTR station. “It’s a bohemian area, a growing place like Sai Kung. There’s a mix of expats and locals, traditional businesses and modern ones.”
Andy also has a shop in Sai Kung town near Casa restaurant. He is looking for a third site on Hong Kong island or Kowloon. “We have low margins so we aim for cheaper rents near residential areas convenient for our customers.”
The aim, Andy, says, “is to try to keep it simple, warm and welcoming. Customers see they are paying for good wine, not for fancy decor.”
To keep prices down, Andy said Winerack is buying in bulk from just a few suppliers and stocks only about 100 wines.
The Winerack website was created five years ago by James Bradshaw and Robert Knightbridge. Andy convinced them to let him use the Winerack brand on a franchise basis and he opened the first store only one year ago.
