The champion underwater robot builders of the University of Science and Technology have retained their Hong Kong title at a competition in Tseung Kwan O swimming pool.
Their robot, Stingray, saw off the competition by mastering complex tasks in the pool out of sight of its student handlers. The team of 15 multi-national students is led by Dhesant Nakka, Johannes Jaeger and Rayan Armani and supervised by robotics professor Tim Woo.
Tim said Stingray has six motors, six cameras and six modules — each readies the robot to do different tasks.
Tim and the students will go to a world competition in Canada this month.
An Institute of Engineering and Technology spokesman said the UST robot makers have earned the right to be regarded as one of the five best teams in the world based on results at international competitions.
Tim said the UST has launched a new programme inviting Hong Kong primary and secondary schools to send teams for three-day courses in robot building. Mentally and physically disabled children are team members. “We can teach them to make a simple robot in two hours.” They also take part in the Government’s “Innocarnivals” which promote technology in the community.
