Quartet forms orchestra intended to be 30 strong

A quartet of musicians has formed what they believe is Sai Kung’s first orchestra. Led by Conductor David Notley, the orchestra will perform its first concerts at Christmas.

One of the musicians’ leaders, trumpet player Frances Wilkinson, said they hope the orchestra will be 30 strong. At the time of writing they had 10 people lined up for the first rehearsal at the Academy.

He is a former assistant musical director of the UAE Philharmonic as well as principal trumpeter for the Bahrain Festival Orchestra and Syrian National Orchestra. He has performed as principal cornet for several top bands and is signed to Red Bull’s label “One28”. David is a music and trumpet teacher in Sai Kung.

Frances, also principal of Clearwater Bay’s Abacus Kindergarten, said Sai Kung Orchestra is looking for piano, string, clarinet, brass, flute, cello and double bass players. She said it will be an intermediate-level, non-profit orchestra. “We will play a mix of classical and modern show tunes.”

Any musician with some experience is welcome, she said. “We are trying to be free. All sorts of people can come and play with us. If you’re a former musician, don’t be shy. Come along and give it a go.”
