Peter Hurricks, the motorcycle-riding pastor of Resurrection Church, is retiring at 65 and returning with his wife, Maggie, to their home in New Zealand.

Resurrection is a daughter church of St Andrew’s in Kowloon. Acting Vicar of St Andrew’s Dale Hanson said a search committee has advertised internationally for a replacement pastor. Several applications have been received, Dale said.  He didn’t know when a new person would be found for the post. “It depends on the process, whether we have a shortlist or not, and so on.”

Pastor Peter’s last day leading a service at Resurrection will be December 13.  Dale said he hopes the new pastor will be on staff by then, but can’t be sure.  Ministers from St Andrews will fill in as necessary.

The pastor of Resurrection is a staff member of St Andrew’s and his or her appointment will be made by the Acting Vicar and Council of St Andrew’s along with representatives from Resurrection.

Peter, who wears a motorcyclist’s leather jacket and has competed in triathlons, described Resurrection as Anglican in style but not really Anglican.  He said the church welcomes people of any belief or no belief. Peter’s style as Sunday service leader is minimalist. Sermons are short, blessings brief and let’s get back to the hymn-singing, which is sometimes no less than inspired, bringing people to their feet, swaying with hands in the air.

A favourite event is the annual pets’ service.  Parishioners bring dogs, cats, birds, turtles, whatever for blessing at one of the happiest family events of the Resurrection year.
