The newly founded Sai Kung Orchestra is rehearsing with fifteen musicians and plans for a Christmas first performance, Conductor David Notley said.
“Players are keen ensemble players with a varying range of experience,” David said. “The one thing they share is the joy music brings to their lives.”
The founder members met through local instrument teaching. Frances Wilkinson, head of the Abacus Kindergarten, takes lessons from David along with her son, Mason. Teresa Thornton, leader of the Sai Kung Choir, teaches alongside David at Kellett School.
A Nam Wai resident, David is experienced as an orchestral trumpet player, teacher and music director in the Middle East, Australia and New Zealand. You can hear David play trumpet with Stray Katz Big Band at Grappa’s Cellar on the first Saturday of each month. They swing along Glenn Miller-style while the Lindy Hop troupe dances. Another opportunity is at Ned Kelly’s six times a year where David is lead trumpeter. Their next performance will be December 13 at 6.30pm.
David said the orchestra is rehearsing weekly with a view to performing a short programme before Christmas. They will play Christmas-themed music and the highlight will be Haydn’s Toy Symphony. This work is popular at Christmas because it is played for fun with toy sounds joining in with the orchestra. “The event will be a mixture of fun, classical music and audience participation.”
