The event is the second biggest on the track cycling calendar after the Olympics and riders win points that may qualify them for the Games. It was held in the four-year-old Tseung Kwan O velodrome which has a 250-metre cycling track and seating for 3000. The building on a 6.6 hectare site is architecturally distinctive with a wavy roof inspired by cycling helmets.

A Hong Kong cycling official said the world event may be the last for the territory because limited Government support meant the local association had lost several million dollars.
