The new Velodrome in Tsueng Kwan O will once again host the UCI Track Cycling World Championships from 12-16 April 2017. This will be the second time in the event’s history that it has been hosted by a country in Asia. The first championship was in 1990 in Maebashi, Japan. In 2016, Tsueng Kwan O was a host to UCI Track Cycling World Cup.
The 2016/2017 championship races were held in Glasgow, Apeldoorn, Cali and Los Angeles. According to Hung-Tak Leung, the Chairman of the Cycling Association of Hong Kong, China: “Hosting the UCI World Championships will further arouse interest in track cycling among the public and help identify talents for the team.”
This year championship´s venue has a 250-metre cycling track as well as spectator facilities for 3,000 people. The Hong Kong Veledrome was opened in December 2013, and it occupies the area of 6.6 hectares.
Hong Kong has a significant number of cyclists, which had been continuously growing since the Olympics in London 2012. This event was particularly important since Hong Kong cyclist Wai Sze Lee won her first Olympic medal in the Woman´s Keirin.
