The University of Science and Technology is hosting “gowns for town” lunches that residents may attend — if you can gain entry, see below.

Held in the Hong Kong Club Building, Central, at the UST’s Business School, the lunches are roughly monthly.

On May 16, Professor Kam Tuen Law will speak on “Quantum Computing — The Next Big Thing”.  New fundamental particles recently discovered — quarks, Higgs bosuns — have got scientists excited over their potential in theory for revolutionising computing. Professor Law will explain how these particles, known as Majorana particles, may be used in superconductors in the future. The speed of computers could take a quantum leap.  The youthful physicist will explain how academics and students at the UST are developing theories and experiments in pursuit of quantum computing.

On June 12, Professor Joseph Hun-wei Lee will take on the subject of “Water Quality Forecasting for Smart Cities”.  A professor of environmental hydraulics and fluid mechanics, he will discuss turbulent water vortices in the seas around us. With better modelling, smart forecasting of water quality for environmentally aware cities is possible. Professor Lee will also reveal progress of the chlorine disinfection project for the harbour.
