The biggest event on the hash house harriers calendar occurs on 10 December. The Santa Hash combines 14 hash clubs in a fun run, lots of beer-drinking and a fund-raiser for Operation Santa Claus. Last year 180 runners of all ages, sexes, shapes and sizes took part.
The run starts this year at 2pm at Delaney’s in Cyberport. Organisation is by the Hong Kong Hash House Harriers, the first hash club in Hong Kong. Current Grandmaster Sam Cheng is in charge with helpers Tim Thane and Bo Fussing. After the run, about an hour for the young and fit, Sam will administer down-downs (necking beer) to miscreants, those who have over-dressed, under-dressed or otherwise transgressed.
This year’s Santa Hash is the 30th. Charities that will benefit include Sai Kung’s Sailability, Crossroads Foundation, Hong Kong Alzheimer’s Association, Intellectually Disabled Education, Maggie’s Cancer Caring and Youth Diabetes. Last year the hashers raised about $60,000.
