A massive clean-up of rental bikes took place in Tseung Kwan O yesterday afternoon. More than 200 were removed from the area around the Waterfront Park. Most were green Gobee bikes, but bikes from other companies were also involved.

According to “Road Traffic (Parking) Regulations”, any person who continuously parks a bike in a parking place for over 24 hours, commits an offence and the relevant government departments, including the Lands Department, will clean them up. BUZZ has reported previously that 790 illegally parked bikes were confiscated by government departments in the last six months of last year.

Notices were fixed to the offending bikes some days before. The cleanup took many people by surprise, but District Councillor Josephine Fung was fully supportive. She is quoted as saying that many people have complained of illegally parked bikes blocking pavements, and she has reported them to the appropriate departments, but on most occasions she has been ignored. She stated that the a special space for parking rental bikes should be made available so that they can be parked legally.
