Food Angel, the charity that collects surplus food and serves meals for the poor, elderly and underprivileged, is looking for volunteers. They must be over 16 to work in the kitchens or deliver meals in a housing estate.
The charity says that one in seven people in Hong Kong lives in poverty, i.e. they earn less than $4,000 a month. Twenty per cent of children live among the poor, in the worst cases growing up stunted. One third of seniors struggle to meet their nutritional needs and may go to bed hungry. Food Angel, established by the Bo Charity Foundation seven years ago, says it has “rescued” 5,219,355 kilogrammes of food that would otherwise have ended up in landfills and served 6,018,096 meals.
Volunteers are needed to work in Food Angel’s kitchens in Chai Wan, Sham Shui Po and Lai Chi Kok. Also they are wanted to serve hot meals at Kowloon Community Centre and to deliver meals and food packs to cage dwellers and others in housing estates. Most volunteers work just a few hours a day. The charity also seeks organisers and communications experts to set up road shows and hold fund raising events. Food Angel sends vans and refrigerated trucks to donors of surplus food. Fresh food, canned or non-perishable foods, oils and seasonings, cooked foods and frozen or chilled foods are all wanted. The food is taken to the charity’s three kitchens where it is processed and packed as hot or cold meals. You can help too if able to donate storage space, shredders, cloth dryers or washing machines.
Beneficiaries of Food Angel are deprived elderly 71% and children of poor families 20% plus homeless, cage dwellers, unemployed, disabled and people undergoing rehabilitation.
