Traffic was brought to standstill around noon today as a container lorry crashed and overturned on the Hiram’s Highway roundabout near Nam Pin Wai.
A 40-foot container truck was coming downhill towards Sai Kung travlling along Hiram’s Highway, when the driver lost control and overturned. The lorry crashed into the roadside railings, skidded along 10 metres of barrier demolishing lampposts, then ploughed into the hilly roadside, where it stopped. The driver was trapped inside the compartment.
Nearby residents heard the loud crash. Emergency workers cut the driver free and took him to hospital.
Police are investigating the cause of the accident; Nam Pin Wai Road was blocked for nearly an hour.
The roundabout is notorious for the 2008 accident when a coach went out of control descending Hiram’s Highway, crashing into a wall, injuring 43 and killing 19. The 50 kph speed limit was imposed soon after.
