Rescue colleague Debbie Chow asked me to come to look at a situation of a dog kept on a chain at a Sai Kung demolition yard.
It was appalling – an old dog, existing only on a small piece of metal, amongst demolition materials and debris with only a lightweight piece of frail plastic overhead as cover. This also was his only shelter during the typhoon. It was not safe, or hygienic, with pee and poo and we were told he had been on a chain for 10 years!
I can usually quickly look and visualise how to make improvements, but this case was difficult. We left, and most of the day my mind was on what could be done. Late afternoon, at the kennels, I cleaned with bleach and made good an unused dog house, bought a small piece of carpet, called Debbie and told her that Chelsea and I were going back to the dog.
We all carried the dog house from my car and work was in progress. In the mess we found a plastic pallet and positioned the dog house on top after clearing an area, by kicking away the rubbish with our feet for his new location. I untied the chain and took him for a quick walk/run of freedom with me being pulled behind up the hill of Chuk Yeung Road carrying the long chain. He was so so happy, doing many wees on the grass and smelling the bushes.
Returning him to a much improved situation, we provided him with a new plastic water dish and a “stray friends” cooked meal. We all left with the feeling we did something positive to help him. A vet appointment will be made for a medical checkup and hopefully desexing. Sadly I cannot permanently remove him as our kennels are at full capacity. We suspect he may have been a contributor to the black female who recently gave birth to 14 puppies at the site, (11 only survived). Mother dog and pups were taken into care by Debbie Chow.
How some people have no concern for their dogs leaves me so infuriated. I just want to put the chain around the owner’s neck and leave them out exposed to the weather.
I’m not always very diplomatic or polite!
