The 29-year-old woman accused of mistreating 45 cats and abandoning them in a village house in Tai Wan, Sai Kung in January 2019, as reported by BUZZ, was sentenced to 240 hours of community service at the Kwun Tong Magistrates Court on Friday (26 July).

The magistrate agreed with the defence that the defendant had emotional problems, but reminded her that “the cat may be just a part of your life, but for the cat, you are everything in the world.”  He stated that she should not have ignored the pets because of emotional problems, but sought help.

The cats were treated by the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA). The SPCA said that under the care of their medical team, all 45 of the cats involved have returned to health and have all found new homes.

The SPCA said that it respected the judgment of the court and reminded the public that they must take care of their pets responsibly and safeguard their animal welfare. After the situation was reported, the cat owner actively cooperated with the SPCA and helped find the cats new homes.
