Platform door fire at Hang Hau – photos

platfor fire 2Last night, (9/3) one of the platform doors at Hang Hau MTR station caught fire and enveloped the end of the platform in smoke.  Sai Kung District councillor Cheng Chung Man took some photos and posted them on his Facebook page, which we copy here.

Just after 9:00 pm last night, one of the platform curtain doors of Hang Hau Station on the Tseung Kwan O Line short circuited. Sparks were seen and flames and smoke filled the end of the platform. About 300 passengers were evacuated. No one was injured in the incident. Firemen dispatched a team  to fight the fire, which put out about an hour later. Police blocked the scene and the fire investigated the cause of the fire.

The MTR said that the platform curtain door of the Tseung Kwan O Line Hang Hau Station headed for Po Lam was faulty. Trains could not go from Hang Hau toward Po Lam Station. By 11:00 pm, the incident had been dealt with, and train services on the Tseung Kwan O Line resumed normal.

MTR stated that at about 9:05 pm, the staff at Hang Hau Station received a report from a passenger stating that there was smoke coming out from the top of the screen door at the front of the train towards Po Lam. The station staff used a fire extinguisher to try to  control the situation, but had to ask for fire services assistance. The station staff evacuated the platform for safety reasons.

Train services between Hang Hau Station and Po Lam Station were temporarily suspended for two hours. MTR arranged a free shuttle bus from Tseung Kwan O to Po Lam Station. At about 10:50 pm, the accident was dealt with, and train services returned to normal. After preliminary investigation, it is believed that a platform curtain door component failure caused the incident. Investigations continue.
