Children of Hong Kong Academy are seen around Sai Kung often in their distinctive red and blue uniforms. We know they are the lucky ones, being set up for successful lives. If you want to send your kid to the HKA how much will it cost: from $112,200 a year to $254,800. These are the rates for 2024 – 2025 recently published.
The relatively new Head of School, succeeding Stephen Dare, is Kasson Bratton. He says sensible things for a headmaster: “When students feel a sense of belonging — that they are seen, known and understood — they are happier, more confident and successful learners.”

More wisdom from Mr Bratton: “Keep (kids) curious. Celebrate good questions as much as good answers. Reward their effort, kindness and determination as much as grades and test scores. Be relentless about the importance of sleep and keep digital devices out of bedrooms.”
Head of School Bratton, who’s from Virginia USA, is broadly experienced, having served at international schools from Haiti to Scotland, Qatar and Nanjing. The HKA takes kids from cradle, almost, through to university, “Pre-K1 to Grade 12”. It’s a primary school and a secondary school: Virginia Hunt is principal of the first, Teresa Tung of the second. Founded in 2000, the non-profit HKA has 500-plus students.
Families may tour the Academy, escorted by a staff member on weekdays. Book through the HKAcademy website.
The public may visit on 3 October from 6.30pm for a R.I.S.E. concert. Various musicians arranged by HKA students and R.I.S.E Entertainment Ltd will perform. Tickets are just $50, with proceeds going to Branches of Hope ROAD project which supports disadvantaged minorities.
To close, more Bratton wisdom: “Be humble. Work hard. Good things will usually happen.”
