Lunchtime yesterday (10/5), a 46-year-old man and a friend went diving in Shek Ngau Chau, off Sai Kung, and found an object on the sea floor that they suspected to be a bomb. They called the police.
The police confirmed that it was a suspected bomb, and the case was temporarily listed as a bomb discovery case with no one was injured.
The case has been referred to the Explosives Disposal Division for follow-up.
In September 2012, shells were also found in the sea area south of Shek Ngau Chau. Then, divers found three shells on the seabed at a depth of about 10 metres, each of which was about 15 centimetres long, and they appearance quite old. The next day, the police dispatched the Flying Tigers “Water Ghost” personnel to the scene to confirm that two of the shells had expired. The Explosives Disposal Division staff detonated two them on the spot; the other was a solid armour-piercing projectile which was taken for further examination.
Shek Ngau Chau is an uninhabited island of Hong Kong. It is located in Mirs Bay, in the north east of the New Territories about 20km northeast of Bate Head (Tuen Tsui) in Sai Kung East Country Park. It is a favourite spot for recreational diving.
