Hong Kong adults are prioritising face mask function over fashion, according to new research from financial comparison website finder.com.
The study, which polled 1,204 Hong Kong adults, reveals 76% – the equivalent of 4,837,559 adults – own a specified face mask.
Blue surgical face masks are the most popular mask type in Hong Kong, with 47% of the adult population owning one, followed by medical grade masks (18%), and cloth masks (14%).
The report also compared Hong Kong against 14 other countries revealing Hong Kong has one of the lowest rates of adoption for fashionable, homemade, and cloth face masks compared to other countries.
Just 4% of Hong Kong adults have a fashionable face mask, with only France seeing a lower rate of ownership at 3%. Hong Kong also has the lowest prevalence for homemade (5%) and cloth masks (14%).
Fashionable face masks are most popular in countries like the UK (25%), US, and South Africa (12% each), while homemade masks are most popular in the US (25%), Brazil (24%) and the UK (22%).
Within Hong Kong, women are slightly more likely than men to own a face mask – 79% compared to 75% – and those aged 55-64 years old are most likely to own a face mask (88%).
