Amid virus crisis, restaurateurs call on government to encourage outside dining as it’s safer

As Sai Kung restaurateurs battle to survive in a pandemic, they say the Government should allow more outside dining because it is safer. Candy Sweet, co-owner of The Ranch, said during SARS 17 years ago restaurants were encouraged to do more on-footpath dining and this should be done again in the time of Covid.  Sing of SingaLing has also said it would be a big help to restaurants if the Government relaxed about outside dining.

“Owners would feel this to be a bigger step towards assistance than small stipends from government and zero relief to assist with the unreasonably high rents in Sai Kung,” Candy  said. Outside dining puts people in the fresh air and increases revenue. “This could be carried out successfully using common sense rather than the archaic practice of just fining the establishments taking back the revenue they have just earned.”

Unreasonable harassment by the white shirts of the FEHD is a continual complaint by district restaurateurs. The uniforms stalk about with gold-striped epaulettes, peaked caps and clipboards making life a misery for owners trying to pay the rent and staff in a market depressed like never before.
