Local media star Sadie Kaye up for major broadcasting award

Local media star, and regular BUZZ contributor, Sadie Kaye has been nominated, and short-listed for a major broadcasting media award by The Association for International Broadcasting Awards (AIBs).

The awards will be announced on 13 November and Sadie’s Mental Ideas Podcast for RTHK Radio 3 is a nominee and finalist. The category (Factual Podcast) is full of heavy hitters like Sky News, CNN, Al Jazeera and the BBC. “So Mental Ideas just being included on this list is an indescribable honour” Sadie told BUZZ.

Because of COVID it will be a virtual awards event this year, instead of a ceremony in London. Last week Sadie recorded a short film about her experiences with the podcast for the AIBs in her garden

The short film will be shown as part of a 2-part TV programme about the finalists to be shown by Al Jazeera on 13 and 16 November. You can find out more about the AIBs here, and can view the shortlist here.

Sadie says that as rank outsiders go, “Mental Ideas Podcast is the rankest! Every time I switch on Sky News they are advertising their “multi-award-winning podcast”, Storycast, with the millions of listeners”.

Sadie is not only short-listed for the AIBs. 10 November is also the release date for Transference: A Bipolar Love Story, the feature film she co-produced (via Mental Ideas) for Contro Vento Films. It is being distributed worldwide by 1091 Pictures. It has won and been selected for several international indie film festivals and received a Special Jury Mention from the New York Socially Relevant Film Festival in September 2020.

13 November is also the launch date for a podcast series she’s been producing/ presenting about the Hong Kong Writers Circle. Then on 19 November the winners of the 2020 Proverse Poetry Prize will be announced at a reception in Hong Kong. Sadie has already been notified that her first poem, War of Voices, has been awarded a place. War of Voices muses on mental health, populism and propaganda. The poem will also be published in Proverse Publishing’s annual anthology of poems by winners and finalists, Mingled Voices 5, in April 2021.

In September BUZZ wrote a story about an initiative Sadie had organised called Hong Kong Kitchen. This has now been picked up by other print media, including the SCMP Post Magazine a couple of weeks ago. Sadie says the project has really taken off and she is now collecting bread contributions from bighearted Hongkongers wanting to help feed the homeless most days. You can catch up with what’s happening with Home Kong Kitchen here. Sadie says ‘”We are looking for volunteer drivers to assist with bread deliveries and anyone interested can email sadie@mentalideas.org

Finally, Sadie’s new monthly humour column, Sharp Pains, started airing on RTHK Radio 3 in Sept 2020 and continues on the last Tuesday of every month at 2:50 pm on the 123 Show. You can listen to the first couple of episodes here and here.
