Horrific attack on dog in Sha Kok Mei

Local Chinese-language media is highlighting a story of horrific animal abuse in Sai Kung that occurred around 3:00 pm yesterday afternoon. A 44-year-old female villager in Sha Kok Mei Village alerted police, saying that a local village dog was being abused by her female neighbour.

The woman had kicked the dog violently with her foot and wiped faeces on its body. During the attack neighbours witnessed what was going on and stopped the abuse. The attacker fled the scene.

Officers from the police and the SPCA arrived to investigate but the suspected dog abuser was not found. The case was classified as cruel treatment of animals and was handed over to the Wong Tai Sin Police District Criminal Investigation Team for follow-up. The dog involved were taken away by animal volunteers and handed over to the veterinarian for inspection.

Catherine Lumsden of Catherine’s Puppies was involved in the rescue. This is her story.

Soda is a seventeen year old village dog that has lived in the same area her entire life. She had an owner many years ago but they left her along with the furniture (that’s exactly what they did) many years ago now. Since then Soda has been cared for by the Sha Kok Mei, Sai Kung community and is well known and well thought of. How she’s made such a grand age living in a yard, we don’t know the but she has.

She started struggling a few years ago with issues you’d expect from a senior dog and Catherine’s Puppies, with the help of Debbie Chow and kind neighbours, has been caring for her and covering her medical needs. We have debated moving Soda many times to the shelter or to a foster but she knows her area and until yesterday was doing well all things considered. During bad weather, rain, cold or extreme heat she goes into the neighbours house and has food and water daily, vets checks etc.

Then yesterday happened… I’m going to say it like it is and not dress this up but my hand is shaking typing this so brace to be horrified. Yesterday my phone exploded and I had to race down to Sha Kok Mei because an old lady had been seen kicking and attacking Soda and using newspaper to pick up dog poo and rub it all over her. Now I’m tearing up as I just cannot comprehend how any human being can behave in such a way and there is absolutely NO justification or excuse for doing this. I didn’t see the ‘lady’ when I got there (this is a blessing for her believe me), who on Earth does something like that!?

To a dog that’s so old she can only stand for minutes at a time and is absolutely no bother to anyone!!!! To sum it up, I picked up Soda and took her to Pets Central where she still is now. The police took statements but so far there is no update if the woman has been charged. Have to leave that in the hands of the authorities now and focus on Soda. I need to get my head around all this first then figure out what’s next for her, she can’t go back to the place she knows as home if there is an evil old nut job capable of this nearby.

Soda doesn’t have long left (she’s so old) and this is most certainly not how anyone who cares about her wanted or foresaw happening. I’m heading to the vets later to see how she’s doing. Our vets bill was already a stress and I was working on a CNY appeal for ‘red pockets’ to help with that. Having the vets on standby is our lifeline BUT it comes at a huge cost even with discounts and the things we don’t get charged for. If anyone can help with the vets bill, we need it! It was $80k last week, more now!
