50-year-old British man hiking in Sai Kung rescued by helicopter but died in hospital

The MacLehose Trail near Milepost 28

Yesterday afternoon (26/9), just after 3:00 pm, police received a report from a hiker, saying that when they were walking to the second section of the MacLehose Trail near the M028 distance post, they found a man who had fainted on the ground. The Government Flying Service sent a helicopter to take the victim to the Eastern District Hospital for emergency treatment. The victim fell into a coma when he arrived at the hospital. Medical staff performed cardiac compression and was later confirmed dead at about 5:00 pm. The cause of death has yet to be determined after an autopsy.

The 50-year-old male victim was a British national. After preliminary investigation, the police believe that he accidentally fainted while hiking from the East Dam of High Island Reservoir to Chek Keng Pier. It is understood that the police found a backpack believed to belong to the victim near the scene. They suspected that the victim, who was accompanied by his brother and cousin, felt unwell while hiking. The brother went to buy water for the victim to drink, but the victim fainted while waiting, his cousin having left the group earlier. The brother later found out that he had passed away.

The name of the deceased has not yet been released by the police.
