Sai Kung’s first proper hotel, called WM perhaps after the street it is on, Wai Man Rd, will open on 1 August, according to Chinese media. It’s a resort-hotel with lots of greenery and water features and has the potential to be an attractive destination for the town’s residents and visitors. The WM has a seashore location with fine views opposite the Hong Kong Academy.

The new general manager has been named as Louis Cheng, who has been appointed by the management company, Rosedale Hotels Group. The owners, directors of the Shaw Group, have invested about $2 billion in the site, construction and fitting out. The boxy design by Aedas architectural firm manages to be unusual and attractive. There are more than 200 rooms in the five-level hotel plus a half-dozen bars and restaurants facing the sea. On the roof there is an infinity pool, which will be a cool place to hang out with a drink and an arm around the spouse while admiring the view of sea and islands.
