Another weekend, another diving fatality

Another diving accident occurred in Sai Kung last night (20/8). Police received a report at 8:00 pm that a man had drowned while diving in the waters near Ko Lau Wan. They dispatched a marine police boat to conduct search and rescue. A 48-year-old man was in a coma when he was rescued and taken Wong Shek Pier , and then transferred by ambulance to Prince of Wales Hospital for emergency treatment. He was confirmed dead at 9:46 pm after arriving at the hospital.

Police received a report from a friend concerning a 48-year-old man who they suspected had drowned in the sea about 50 metres away from Ko Lau Wan, Sai Kung. Officers arrived at the scene and the victim was taken to the Prince of Wales Hospital in a coma, where he was later confirmed dead. He had been snorkelling with friends and got into difficulties. They tried to save him but he slipped into a coma, so they called the police for assistance. It is reported in the Chinese media that he was a novice diver.

After preliminary investigation, it is believed that he drowned while diving at the site. The cause of death is to be determined after an autopsy.
