The Hebe Haven Yacht Club is now seeking volunteers, teams and sponsors for the 24-Hour Dinghy Race on 22 and 23 October. This is the much anticipated, finest charity event benefiting humans in Sai Kung*.
The Pak Sha Wan waterfront swarms with life and colour for the Dinghy Race. This year it will have a Hawaiian theme. A DJ will be rocking the crowds, competing with local bands, the Race Village out by the sea will be buzzing with sponsor and charity booths and smiling volunteers, dinghies will be racing near the shore and there will be lots of happy disabled people enjoying themselves, many in wheel chairs, for this is the home of Sailability, the admirable charity giving sailing experiences.

The event, open to the public, is well supported by the community. Hong Kong Academy will be there with a booth and a dinghy racing team, Marine Police ditto, local businesses will be offering food and drink and wares at discounted prices, profits going to the charities. The dinghy race has raised $10 million since 2002, with $7.1 million going to the Children’s Cancer Foundation. Other beneficiaries: Treats, which aims to enhance the self-confidence and social skills of special needs children; Ideal, a charity supporting people with intellectual disabilities; Sai Kung District Community Centre, operator of a foodbank, Chinese medicine centre and pre-school services; and Sailability.

People who want to support this marvellous event can find how to do so at the HHYC website. Also you can email pr_mgr@hhyc.org.hk. Volunteers are needed to help on the Friday, arrange decorations, and set up booths and marquees. On the weekend they are needed to man safety boats, act as marshalls, do lap counting and help about the Race Village. You may enter a team to compete against the Academy, Police, Hebe Dragons and others. Sponsors are wanted to back the dinghy races and benefit the five excellent charities.
