Sacred Heart and Resurrection churches plus The Hive plan special Christmas events in Sai Kung – everyone welcome

Carol singing at Sai Kung’s Yim Tin Tsai island historic St Joseph’s Chapel

“Here comes Santa Claus, here comes Santa Claus, right down Santa Claus lane / He doesn’t care if you are rich or poor, he loves you just the same.” Everybody’s favourite red-suited, white-bearded character is expected to pay special attention to Sai Kung this year with his reindeer team and a huge sack of goodies for the kids. We hope Grandma doesn’t get run over by a reindeer. SAI KUNG BUZZ is trying to get further details from the Santa Claus office at the Arctic Circle, but they’re not answering our calls. Too busy. So we tried to contact Rudolf the Red-Nosed Reindeer, the most famous reindeer of all, but no luck so far.

But we can tell you that Sai Kung’s The Hive will be buzzing. Managed by Salve Bradbeer, The Hive will stage a Christmas Market on 7 December from 11:00 am – 6:00 pm. Here you can sample gifts and handicrafts from local vendors, take part in DIY workshops, adopt a puppy, and enjoy live music, mulled wine, hot chocolate and festive treats. Admission is free. There is also a Christmas Garland Arrangement Workshop on 30 November.

Doris of Resurrection Church performs at the 2017 carol concert in Sai Kung

Rev. Lucas Durant of Resurrection Church* said they plan carol singing at the courtyard in front of the Temple on 22 December from 4:45 to 5:45pm. Government approvals are being sought. The carol singing will be by Resurrection parishioners and the public backed by church musicians. Rev. Durant said there will be mulled wine and minced pies for everyone who turns up.

Sacred Heart Church used to have one of Sai Kung’s most attractive Christmas events – Mary on a donkey parading round the streets – sadly yet to be resurrected after Covid

Christmas Masses will be held at Sacred Heart Church on 24 and 25 December, Sai Kung parish priest Father Raja Duggimpudi told BUZZ. On Christmas Eve at 9:00 pm there will be a Mass, which always attracts “a big crowd”. On Christmas morning, there will be another Mass. They will be conducted by either Father Raja or his colleague Father Sergio Ticozi.

St Joseph’s Chapel, Yim Tin Tsai

At Sai Kung’s Yim Tin Tsai island there will also be carol singing during December on the staircase of the historic St Joseph’s Chapel. Students of Ms Poon Chi-ching will perform as part of the Sai Kung Hoi Art Festival.

If we’ve missed anything out, and you are involved with a Christmas-related activity please let us know saikungbuzz@gmail.com

* Rev. Durant confirmed  Resurrection Church holds regular Sunday services at 10:00 am in the gym of HK Academy. The Church used to hold Sunday services that were casual with a lot of singing. Rev. Durant said, ” We are a little more formal now, but not much.”
