Schragel’s Delicatessen, now open in Sai Kung, claims to be the only Jewish deli cooking New York-style bagels in Hong Kong. L’chaim! It is located in the square that isn’t (Hoi Pong) next to Little Cove coffee shop.

Schragel’s was founded by Rebecca Schrage whose mother is a Hong Kong native and whose father is a New York Jew. Her grandparents ran bagel delis in the USA in the 50s and 60s and Rebecca says the recipes have been handed down for generations.

“Bagels are freshly baked every morning . . . each bagel is hand-rolled, kettle boiled and stone baked.” Foodies will be strongly attracted to Schragel’s. Examples of Rebecca’s shvung dishes: Loxy Lady bagel with smoked salmon, scallion schmear, capers and red onion $105; Egg ‘n’ Cheese bagel with fried egg, tomato, cheddar and avocado $95; Reuben sandwich with pastrami, sauerkraut, Swiss cheese, island dressing $170; Bagel Dawg with Kosher beef hot dog, sauerkraut, deli mustard $105; followed by a traditional sweet, Bert’s Babka, cinnamon cocoa braided cake bread $45.

If you feel like a tipple, Schragel’s is licensed. You can sample, if feeling brave, The Mendel Schrage Martini, vodka, dry vermouth, shaken, home-made pickles. “Ask for it DIRTY.”
