Pets blessed as Sai Kung remembers Saint Francis of Assisi

One of the most charming events on the Sai Kung calendar occurred on 26 October, the Blessing of the Animals. Presiding was Father Raja Duggimpudi who prayed for the pets and sprinkled holy water over them as they were brought to him at the forecourt of Sacred Heart Church. Father Raja is a good man who laughs a lot, happy in his pastoral work.

The blessing is performed annually in honour of the marvellous St Francis of Assisi (1181 — 1226) who was one of the first people to speak up for the animals, exhorting people to care for them kindly. St Francis called all creatures his brothers and sisters and even preached to birds.
