A book launching will be held at Bookazine Tai Kwun on 25 March from 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm by Tina, Rog and Mui Thomas. “An Unexpected Adoption; The Girl Behind the Face” is the story of how the saintly couple met then adopted Mui, who has an unusual skin condition. The book’s cost is $220 and you will be able to find a copy at any one of the stores in the Bookazine chain. This will be a good way for you to support an inspiring family.

Tina and Roger Thomas

There is another way you can meet Tina and Roger. They are regulars at Starbucks Sai Kung. Also you’ll see them around town, always walking hand in hand.

Excerpts from a South China Morning Post review:

This “is one woman’s unlikely journey to escape the crushing trauma of her past — and in the process help an abandoned child escape hers. This uplifting memoir . . . is raw, powerful and compelling, filled with lump-in-throat honesty, humour and love.” When Tina and Rog met Mui she was “an explosively angry orphan baby girl with an appearance-altering disorder”. Some people urged the couple to just walk away; there was no hope for Mui. Doctors told Rog and Tina Mui would die in infancy.

The saintly Thomases refused to walk away.

They adopted Mui. There was no plan, no support, no money, just Tina’s determination to fight fiercely for Mui and Rog’s unwavering commitment to them both. Believed to be the fourth oldest survivor of Harlequin Ichthyosis, Mui is now an award-wining sportswoman. She’s a battler “uncompromisingly forthright and unafraid to have fun”.

Although bruised, the family has fought back against the ignorant, the bullies, the nasties. The internet exploited Mui for clickbait. Shrugging off crude discrimination, Mui went on to have champagne with a Duchess.

SAI KUNG BUZZ adds a tribute too to the late David Tang, who was a financial supporter of the Thomases.
