Fire Services Department Seminar on the IoT Fire Detection System

The Hong Kong Fire Services Department (HKFSD), in collaboration with the District Fire Safety Committee (Sai Kung District) and the Fire Services Department Community Emergency Preparedness Pioneer Honorary Presidents Association (Sai Kung District), held a Seminar on the IoT Fire Detection System and Building Emergency Pioneers Course at the Sai Kung Jockey Club Town Hall on 29 September 2026. 

Below is an overview of the key highlights and updates from the event:

1. IoT Fire Detection System (Internet of Things)

Designed as an alternative compliance solution for older buildings—specifically those under six storeys receiving Fire Safety Directions—the system targets common hurdles such as high installation costs and lengthy construction times. 

• Rapid Installation: Takes significantly less time to install, speeding up safety compliance.
• Cost Efficiency: Reduces overall expenditure while meeting statutory fire safety requirements. 
• Smart Monitoring: Features 24/7 continuous monitoring and early warning alerts to ensure reliable system operation. 

2. Building Emergency Pioneers Training

The course provided residents and building stakeholders with practical safety, risk management, and emergency response skills: 

• Hazard Identification: Spotting common risks, such as propped-open smoke doors or obstructed escape routes, for immediate follow-up. 
• First Response and Initial Firefighting: Training participants to correctly operate fire hose reels and fire extinguishers for early-stage firefighting, while assisting neighbours (particularly elderly or mobility-impaired residents) during evacuations. 
• First Aid Skills: Hands-on instruction in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and operating Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs). 

破 轉 拉 射 Break – Turn – Pull – Aim/Spray

1. 破 Break  打破火警鐘玻璃 Break the fire alarm glass call point.
2. 轉 Turn 逆時針轉動來水開關掣 Turn the main water supply valve counter-clockwise.
3. 拉 Pull 由喉轆絞盤處拉出消防喉  Pull out the fire hose from the reel drum.
4. .射 Aim / Spray  打開喉咀掣，射向火源底部  Open the nozzle and direct the jet at the base of the fire.

3. Community Engagement and Practical Support

• Attendees received face-to-face consultations with Fire Services personnel, watched live demonstrations, and were provided with emergency preparedness gifts / “Four Treasures of Fire Prevention”, which include handheld fire extinguishers, standalone smoke alarms, fire blankets and fire escape masks.
• District Council members and local leaders, including Li Tin Chi (Sky), attended to support community outreach and promote fire safety awareness across Sai Kung.
