Homeless migrant worker sleeps rough on Waterfront: How to help?

A homeless migrant worker was spotted on the Sai Kung waterfront this morning sleeping rough. She had a thin rubber mattress so she could lie across the metal bars on the seat. Beside her she had a bag and her suitcase, presumably with all her possessions. What happened to this girl? Why  was she sleeping rough? Had a nasty employer kicked her out with nowhere to go. She’s in a strange country, knows nobody and hasn’t a clue what to do. The Sai Kung Buzz team member who saw her wanted to offer help, but the girl was sleeping so soundly he did not want to wake her.

Two institutions will help distressed migrant workers, Christian Action and Mission for Migrant Workers.

CHRISTIAN ACTION: 2382 3339 or info@christian-action.org.hk   Led by Cheung Ang Siew-mei, this organisation will assist a migrant worker with all her needs, providing advice, legal assistance, aides to help her deal with government departments and if necessary the courts, and even a hostel where she may stay if necessary.

MISSION FOR MIGRANT WORKERS: 2522 8264 or mission@migrants.net An offshoot of St John’s Cathedral, MMW provides rescue services for migrant workers, food, guidance, para-legal support and beds at Bethune House. It runs Sunday outreach services and care hubs in public spaces as well as offering education and training plus assistance with dealing with government bodies and consulates.

If you know of a domestic helper in trouble, help her to contact one of these splendid organisations and if necessary go along with her providing emotional support and advice.
