16-year-old Amy Taylor shines at China youth athletics championships

Amy Taylor, a 16-year-old Tso Wo Hang resident and daughter of two Dragonair pilots, has broken the Hong Kong junior record for the 400-metre hurdles.

Her dad, Pete Taylor, said Amy is tall for her age, 5’9”, and showed early promise as an athlete. Residents will often see Amy training at the Sai Kung town track as well as the Hong Kong Sports Institute in Fo Tan.

Amy qualified to join the Hong Kong national team as a sprinter and hurdler.  In April this year she went with the team on the Hong Kong Government-sponsored trip to Chongqing for the All-China National Youth Championships. She raced in the 400-metre sprint, coming 13th out of 48 of the best in China, and in the 400-metre hurdles, finishing seventh out of 22. This latter performance (1:03.74) broke the Hong Kong junior record, previously standing at (1:03.87). She also raced in the 4x100m relay team and helped them qualify 7th with a time of 49.05.
