Sai Kung to benefit, partially, from $500M fund as submerged villages exhibit gets set to open

Villages submerged under the waters of the High Island reservoir are commemorated in an exhibition to be opened this month in the town centre. A Ling Nan University professor, Dr Lau Chi-pang, is in charge of developing it, District Officer Maureen Siu told SAI KUNG BUZZ.

When construction of the reservoir began in 1971 the village people, many of them fisher folk, were resettled in the Sai Kung area. They came from Lan Nai Wan, now sunken near the High Island east dam, and several surrounding villages, also under water. Transport to market or school in Sai Kung from the isolated villages in those days was by sampan.

The exhibition being developed by Professor Lau and his team will be housed in two rooms  at the yellow-walled historic school now used as a community centre between the Mona Fung clinic and the big banyan tree. Workers can be seen in there at present redecorating the centre.  Dr Lau was appointed chairman of the newly formed Advisory Committee on Built Heritage Conservation one year ago.  At the time the Secretary for Development, Paul Chan, said the Built Heritage Conservation Fund would have initial funding of $500 million.
