Cava is now boarded up, but will soon re-emerge… as a Chinese restaurant. Or so we are informed by a staff member. Confirmation has not yet been forthcoming from Doug Marshall, who owns it with his family.
One of his friends calls Doug “the biggest little retailer in town”. He has three businesses, owned with family or partners: the others are the Vila Villa Hunan-Szechuan restaurant near the basketball court and the children’s playgroup and education centre named Bumblebee on Wan King Path.

If Cava is in fact going to be transformed into a Chinese restaurant, it is a smart move. Cava has not been doing well under the twin burdens common to restaurants in Sai Kung, high rents and low week-day business, but Vila Villa has proved popular, pulling in the customers.
Doug has previously told BUZZ that Cava is “a 100 per cent family business”. He has been running it with wife Kathy, her sister Maggie and her brother Siu Yi, the chef known as “Fat Boy”. He said he is the majority owner of Vila Villa with a co-investor in the background. Bumblebee hosts pre-school classes in Cantonese, Mandarin and English, full-day playgroups and homework tutoring.
