The Pier Hotel, said to be opening in January, turns out to be owned by the family of Francis Choi Chee-ming, the world’s largest toy manufacturer. The latter claim appears in Wikipedia, which says the Chuk Kok resident has a net worth of US$3.8 billion. Bloomberg says over US$4 billion.
Chee-ming lives at The Cove, Chuk Kok, in a three-storey house raided by burglars three years ago. The billionaire, his wife, baby and nanny locked themselves in the main bedroom. Police arrived and the two burglars legged it, empty-handed.
At 72, Chee-ming is a collector of cars, watches and horses. His employees total 70,000, most of them working in 20 million sq ft of factories at Shenzhen and Shaoguan. From his Hong Kong headquarters he also operates automotive, jewellery and property businesses, including Sai Kung’s Beach/Surf Hotel, now serviced apartments.
The toy manufacturer has three children, including two daughters named Crystal and Carmen. Crystal featured in the news some years ago suing a local sleaze sheet over the “celebrity nude photo scandal”. One of the daughters, BUZZ has learned, owns The Pier, described as a boutique hotel with just 40 rooms in three storeys. It has a good view over the Hebe Haven boat harbour and houses the recently opened 39-seat Japanese restaurant named WA Theater.
