Professor Rob Hayes, who resides in the upper levels of O Tau, wants to know if this is legal. Idling your engine while selling stuff off the back of a truck in the middle of town.
Rob says he politely suggested to the truck operator he might be breaking the law. This elicited a stream of abuse with some pointed remarks about his parentage.
We will ask the local police chief.
Reply from Senior Inspector Michael Lai, operations chief at Sai Kung police station:
“While illegal parking is no doubt an offence, idling vehicles with engines running constitutes an offence under Motor Vehicle Idling (Fixed Penalty) Ordinance, Cap 611.
“According to the Laws of Hong Kong, Section 52A of the Road Traffic Ordinance also makes it an offence for a person to permit or suffer any person to drive or use an advertising vehicle without a permit issued by the Commissioner for Transport. We need to ascertain if the concerned vehicle has a permit or not.
“Grateful if you would ascertain if the informant would like to make a formal report for us so we can obtain more information regarding the case.”
