A trio of mainlanders who are, or were, kitted out with burglary tools may be at large in our district after eluding a police manhunt.
Alert reader Jill Lessiter was first to report police chasing suspicious men at Pak Tam Au and we asked the local police for comment. The new Sai Kung operations chief, Senior Inspector Jacky Chan Ching-kit, responded.
Rural patrol officers spotted three suspicious mainlanders near the Pak Tam Au public toilet on 26 July, Jacky said. The officers approached the men, who fled down a footpath towards Chek King. As the trio scarpered, they dropped three rucksacks. These contained crowbars, screwdrivers, surgical masks, gloves and survival equipment such as a gas stove and cans of food.
After a 200-metre pursuit the officers lost sight of the men. Reinforcements were called and the area surrounded, Jacky said, by more officers from the Rural Patrol Unit, Police Tactical Unit and Emergency Unit. Marine police craft steamed around the coastline, GFS helicopters hovered overhead. At about midnight the search was called off without the mainlanders being found.
Jacky said the police manhunt will continue and roadblocks will be set up for ID checks. Jill said she saw officers checking passengers on a bus yesterday.
