The boutique hotel on the Pak Sha Wan waterfront, owned by the family of Sai Kung’s richest man, has opened. The 40-room Pier Hotel is not cheap: rack/walk-in rates range from $2400 a night for the littlest room at 326 sq ft to $4800 a night for a 666 sq ft Ocean Front Terrace room, although online deals can be half these rates.

When our reporter visited you couldn’t have a drink by the rooftop swimming pool and admire the view of Hebe Haven, because it was not open yet, but is scheduled to be so within a week. If you have a fat wallet or expense account you can eat at the hotel’s sole restaurant, WA Theater where the meals start at $800 a head. This small, expensive, Japanese-themed place claims to have been set up by Japanese food exporters as a promotional outlet.

The family behind Sai Kung’s new hotel is that of Francis Choi Chee-ming, a resident of The Cove at Chuk Kok who is said by Bloomberg to be worth more than US$4 billion. Francis is reported to be the world’s largest toy maker, employing 70,000 in his factories over the border. The family also owns the Beach/Surf Hotel at Sha Ha, running it as service apartments.

The receptionist who quoted the rack room rates above to SAI KUNG BUZZ said the operational boss at The Pier is Tony Lo. He did not return our call.
