One of the finest events on the Sai Kung calendar — some would argue the finest — is going ahead this weekend, despite the attentions of Typhoon Mangkhut. The 24-hour Charity Dinghy Race at the Hebe Haven Yacht Club starts at 2:00 pm on Saturday, 29 September The Race Village will be crowded in the predicted sunny weather and the Carnival will be rollicking with performances by local and downtown bands.
A spokesman for the HHYC said divers had confirmed the race area is free of hazards. An independent testing company has checked the water quality and decided it is normal, ie unaffected by the sewage spill.
Two-time world paralympics champion Hannah Stodel with be the star of the racing, joining in the 24-hour event. Thirty-five boats will be racing with her. This year the Race Village has 60 booths where you can eat and drink, buy handcrafts, chat and meet the folks who run splendid charities. The HHYC, a member and guests-only club normally, is open to the public for the two days. You can enjoy the club’s cuisine, sit on the balcony and admire the festive scene on the forecourt and at sea.
The Race Village Carnival will be staged from noon to 7:00 pm on Saturday and 10:00 am to 4:00 pm on Sunday. DJ Kevin Lewis will perform along with Village Dogs and Pineapple Jam, our local bands. There will also be IDEAL dancing and a Solo performance by Bong from Impact HK.
Its a charity event. Come along and support them: Children’s Cancer Foundation, Sailability, ImpactHK, Sai Kung Stray Friends Foundation, TREATS and IDEAL.
