Super-typhoon Mangkhut caused serious damage to Sai Kung Sewage Treatment Works, with partially damaged pipes and damaged secondary treatment facilities. The sewage treatment plant can only maintain a partial sewage treatment service
The Drainage Services Department checked all the facilities after the typhoon and found that some pipes damaged. It is expected to take some time to complete the repair work.
DSD is now adding a disinfection process to the primary treated sewage and then circulating it for nearshore discharge to reduce the impact on nearby waters. Due to the need to clean up the debris after the typhoon and repair the shark prevention nets at the beaches nearby the Sai Kung Sewage Treatment Works, Kiu Tsui Beach, Trio Beach and Half Moon Bay Beach near the Sai Kung Sewage Treatment Works are temporarily closed until this is complete.
Seawater samples had already been collected by EPD staff at the three Sai Kung beaches, for testing to check the water quality of the beaches.
The sewage bypass and overflow may lead to temporary deterioration of seawater quality in the vicinity. For health reasons, the public are advised to avoid recreational activities, angling or seawater abstraction in the potentially affected sea or waterfront areas at Port Shelter near Sai Kung Sewage Treatment Works.
