Around 11:00 am this morning swimmers found a woman floating in the sea near the raft platform at Clearwater Bay Second Beach, Sai Kung. She did not respond to their attention, and knowing something was wrong, they shouted for help. The beach lifeguard immediately dispatched a rescue canoe, and he brought the woman back to the beach, and, using defibrillators, kept the woman alive, but unconscious, until the ambulance arrived to take her to hospital, where she sadly died at 3:28 pm. A red flag warning was in force at the time.
The Hong Kong and Kowloon Lifeguard’s Union appealed to the public not to go to the beaches, because life-saving equipment and associated facilities had been damaged by the recent typhoon and, when a red flag is flying they are unsafe for swimming. At the same time, beaches around Sai Kung were affected by the damage to the sewage treatment plant, which will also affect the health of swimmers.
The Leisure and Cultural Services Department has raised red flags at most beaches in Hong Kong and has appealed to the public not to use them for swimming.
