I asked Dandelion

A poem by Psyche Chong

I’ve just gone to Tibet and the place is so very beautiful where inspired me having written a poem while I was at Tashi Lhunpo Monastery and noticed a Dandelion growing between stones. I remembered I translated a poem written by Tsangyang Gyatso (the 6th Dalai Lama) last year, namely, ‘I asked Buddha’. Hence, I have written the attached poem (I asked Dandelion) by borrowing his genre and the floral meaning of Dandelion.

I asked Dandelion

I asked Dandelion:

What are you doing here, sitting alone between the stones?

I asked Dandelion:

Do you hear me, do you see me? I’m just in front of you.

Dandelion replied:

Hush… be quiet. I’m listening monks chanting the mantra of life.

You hear their voices emanating from the monastery vibe.

I asked Dandelion:

Why they repeatedly chant? Would it make a difference after chanting?

Dandelion replied:

The thoughts and words they choose to express,
gradually shapes the core of their identity and destiny.

It’s not the magic played by the mantra,
rather it’s to collect your thoughts,
little by little from time to time
when you chant

I asked Dandelion:

What’s the point to collect myself as if I don’t know what I want?

Whenever whatever I wish to pursue, I will never grab it tight to the last straw.

Dandelion replied:

It’s too early to determine when’s the end,
not even when your flesh and blood disappear as ash.

The world of karma flows with water drops
from clouds to sea bed,
it has the ripple effect
that you will never clearly understand.

I asked Dandelion:

If so I need not to do anything but to wait for whatever comes to my sense.

Dandelion replied:

There are streams among mountains, however, the walls of hills deter the sound of waterfall,
which makes the music becoming a lonely song.

Detaching from the world doesn’t bring you happiness,
it may give you minutes of peace
until you got lost in the deep,
and you will be feeling sadder than before.

I asked Dandelion:

What’s that? What’s that?

Dandelion replied:

People fear hurts so they dodge.
But you can’t stop moving because you are scared of fall.

You see kids never stop running and you see laughs are always their innocent cores.

I said, Dandelion:

Not so not so.

We know core of the Eightfold Path which involves control of our mind,
to train our mind not to dwell in the past,
the realm in which we can experience peace the most.

Dandelion replied:

Dear, you need not, train your mind not to dwell in the past.

Rather the way we give entirely our eyes will then shine,
provided we don’t calculate what we have given,
we will have our contentment.

Dandelion replied:

Our eyes, are to see everything outside, not our side.
They are not to see what we want but your beloved wants.

Our heart, is to think after what we have perceived,
to remedy our eyes so to think beyond,
beyond our sight that sometimes may be wrong.

Dandelion replied:

None of these given by God are to see ourselves,
until you see it from mirror or river,
your surface reflection not your deep self.

I whispered:

My esteem is nothing when compared to the one I love.
As his ever smiling face is everything that I will see more important.
Failing which it seems my bones,
that have gone out of joint hurting me even to a greater zone.

Dandelion replied:

Don’t ask do you hear me, do you see me.

Forget yourself will then forget every hurt.
The truthfulness you have given,
you light up yourself this life indeed,
and the next life also.

I close my eyes to see and to make a wish,
blow the seeds into air passing on her spirit,
to ensure survival of selfless beauty,
and to carry him my thoughts and dreams.

I wait for the fate without asking anything,
as a gift to him
bringing him happiness,
delivering him my promise of total faithfulness.

I shall see you again, Dandelion,
A century after, when you again,
bloom.
