Marine Police and Customs anti-smuggling operation in Long Harbour nets $5.3 million of contraband

A joint task force of The Marine Police Regional Task Force, the Marine Police Vessel Division, the Marine Police North Division and the Customs Department launched an anti-smuggling operation in the waters of the Long Harbour, ​​Sai Kung on Wednesday (15 May) at about 4:00 pm.

The officers found that six men were loading cargo on a speedboat off the coast, and suspected that they were carrying out smuggling activities. The six men then boarded their speedboat and the police squadron gave chase, but the speedboat eventually fled into mainland waters.

During the operation, officers seized a total of 34 boxes of suspected smuggled goods, including bird’s nest, mobile phones, computer memory and about 700 kilograms of suspected rosewood. The total market value was about $5.3 million.

The case will be investigated by the Customs Department.

Under the Import and Export Ordinance, anyone who exports un-manifested cargo will be liable on conviction to a maximum fine of $2 million and imprisonment for seven years.
