Christie’s autumn auction at the Hong Kong Convention Centre next month is expected to see sales of hundreds of millions of dollars despite the troubles on Hong Kong’s streets. At the auction collectors will have a chance to buy a Rolex with a nickname such as “Steve McQueen” for about $1.5 million or a Hermes Himalayan niloticus crocodile handbag with white gold and diamonds, also for around $1.5 million.
It is actually a series of auctions from 22 to 27 November. On show and up for bidding will be: Chinese ink art by Liu Kuo-sung, Lin Dan, Li Huayi, Xu Lei, Xu Bing, Wang Tiande, Wang Dongling and Lui Shou Kwan; fine wines and spirits featuring rare Scotch and Japanese whiskies; handbags such as the Hermes Himalaya Birkin Handbag advertised as “the Holy Grail” of handbags; Chinese contemporary art and calligraphy; ceramics; jewels; and watches.
Some of the Chinese paintings are expected to fetch between $10 million and $60 million, while one by Zao Wou-ki could go for as much as $120 million. This art and rare objects have been sourced by Christie’s from private collections around the world.
