Hong Kong’s finest sporting and cultural events are going down like skittles thanks to a few hundred criminal protesters trashing the city. Oxfam Trailwalker, Rolling Loud hip-hop festival, Sai Kung’s Buzz Concert for the Animals, Wine and Dine Festival and now Clockenflap have all been cancelled.
The organiser of Clockenflap said, “While it pains every one of us at Magnetic Asia to cancel Clockenflap 2019, we still believe in bringing people together in positive ways and will continue to unite people through the power of music and arts.” Magnetic Asia is an admirable enterprise formed by young Hong Kong entrepreneurs led by Mike Hill and Justin Sweeting. They had more than 80 bands and art shows, coming from all around the world, lined up for this year’s festival. Their fans will be worried about the financial impact on the firm*. Magnetic Asia said all tickets will be fully refunded.
Meanwhile, hundreds of Trailwalkers ignored the cancellation and started at Sai Kung Country Park on Friday anyway. They had been training for months for the 100km run amounting to four marathons back to back. Allen, a member of the Hash House Harriers who still turns up for weekly runs although well into his seventies, said, “The organisers are weak, wet and wimpy. You don’t need buses nor the MTR to go run over the hill ranges. Arnold Schwarznegger would call them girls’ blouses.” This weekend hundreds of runners and walkers are up there in the hills enjoying the camaraderie of their epic endurance event and sod the weak organisers. To their credit the organisers had left stashes of water at strategic locations on the trail for the intrepid athletes who have gone out there in brilliant weather anyway.
* Also worrying is the financial impact on Central Venue Management which runs the 36,000 sq metre Central Harbour Event Space under contract to the Government. The event space was to have hosted above festivals such as Wine and Dine and Clockenflap, among others.
