In less than a week, the new district councillors will take up their duties. Many districts will hold their first meeting within the first seven days of January next year. According to the website of the Sai Kung District Council, the first meeting will be held on 2 January. The agenda states that the meeting will start at 9:30 am in the Sai Kung Tseung Kwan O Government Complex 38 Pui Shing Road, Hang Hau.
The two main items on the agenda are Election of the Chairman of the Sai Kung District Council and Election of the Vice-Chairman. The third item is Any Other Business, which is where it may get interesting.
The new chairman of the Sai Kung District, is expected to be the Chairman of the Neo-democrats Ben Chung Kam-lun. He confirmed to Apple Daily that he has contacted the Home Affairs Department to see if they can discuss the establishment of a committee or a working group to investigate the anti-extradition bill protests over the past six months including investigating police violence at various incidents, and concern for the mental health of residents. He mentioned that the establishment will probably oppose the relevant discussions.
He also pointed out that it may be difficult to do something in the first meeting, but through the establishment of committees and other functions, it can demonstrate the principles that the District Councils will be following from now on. For example, the Transport Committee can be expanded to study bicycles and pedestrian-friendly facilities.
